Moving Roots

Moving Roots is a screendance that explores the histories of the Greek immigrant community in Salt Lake City through the intersection of archival materials, movement, and contemporary experience. Drawing from photographs, documents, and community records, the work revisits stories of migration, labor, belonging, and cultural identity. Traditional dance practices, including Pentozalis, become choreographic tools through which cultural heritage is carried, transformed, and reimagined across generations. Created from the perspective of a Greek woman who recently joined this community, the project engages with archives that have often been shaped by male voices and experiences. Through screendance, Moving Roots offers an alternative lens for encountering these histories, connecting personal experience with collective memory.By bringing archival materials into dialogue with movement, the work creates a space where past and present coexist, inviting audiences to reflect on the ways migration continues to shape communities, identities, and senses of home.
